Mark Manders (1968)
Things, thoughts, meanings and associations are the building blocks of the ever-expanding universe of Mark Manders. Since 1986, he has been working on Self-portrait as a building: an imaginary place to live, complete with map, in which he reveals his own inner world. Drawings, ordered objects, clay and bronze sculptures and installations appear in a concourse, their place and meaning continually shifting, multiplying or vanishing as you go. Manders once aspired to be a writer, until he discovered that a writer steers the thoughts of the reader; after all, a story must be told in words. An image language appeared to offer more conceptual freedom while, at the same time, could be experienced at a glance.
