Killaars began working with textiles and clothing with connections to Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist cultures in 1996. By 2008, she was creating installations like Studie voor Kariatides [Study for Caryatids], inspired by the sari, the traditional shawl that is so strongly rooted in Indian culture. To some, the cloths in this and other works would be associated with the wearing of the burqa. Killaars appears to want to share her fascination for Western and Eastern influences in all openness. Colours and fabrics are multi-interpretable carriers of information and meanings: a treat for the eye, tactile, but also charged with cultural and social significance. Identities and cultures prove to be complex structures of values and meaning. Killaars explores them with open eye and invites the viewer to let go of all forms of disengagement.
