Rembrandt Association Symposium in Utrecht

17-10-2008 | Other news

The ‘Allies or Opposites’ Symposium focused on the range of different players who all contribute to public art collections in the Netherlands. Do they complement each other or get in one another’s way?

Private art collections have traditionally formed the basis for public art collections in the Netherlands. Most museums in the Netherlands were established in the late nineteenth century. The Rembrandt Association was founded 125 years ago during this period. The association promotes public art collections such as the ones we are now able to view in museums.

While we saw the establishment of several private museums (for example De Pont in Tilburg) in the Netherlands a couple of decades ago, we now see strong growth in corporate collections, both in terms of their number and historical value. These collections can also contribute to public art collections in the Netherlands. Different players with the same objective? Are they Allies or Opposites?
